The Movie Version of the Help Opens This Wednesday

The widely popular book The Help by Kathryn Stockett has been made into a movie that will be released next Wednesday, August 10, 2011. The book is a highly emotional look into the lives of two black nannies and maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the late 1960s.

The movie is loaded with stars like Cicely Tyson, Sissy Spacek, Viola Davis and Emma Stone. The story is an emotional roller coaster of the experiences of these nannies with the families and children. Love, loyalty, abuse, and bigotry all make their appearance in this moving story.

Emma Stone’s character Skeeter has recently returned home from college and is an aspiring writer. It is the story of Abilene and Winny, the two African American maids, that she finds and tells with their help. This formula of a book about a book being written about what could be a very touchy subject makes the story emotional and engaging instead of threatening like it could be.

It will be interesting to see if the actresses do justice to the story and whether it has the potential to deliver some Oscar winning performances.

“What God Commands” is the New Work by Gabriele Salvatores

This is the new movie by Gabriele Salvatores and is the second collaboration between director and writer Niccolo Ammaniti, author of the novel from which the film is based. Ammaniti also co-wrote the screenplay. If you like Italian movies and if you are used to watch movies online don’t miss this film set in Italy. The main characters are a father now unemployed (former factory worker), a teenage son following the father like a shadow in daily life and anti-fascist thoughts, a mentally retarded man who spends his days hanging out in the country. Salvatores substantially reduced the number of characters that were present in the book and made a narrative movie divided into two sections: the first space from the descriptive part of the characters, and in the second builds a kind of thriller movie. We appreciate the effort to build a story with original characters and we think that “As God Commands” is a decent movie.
